What does illegally-trafficked animals, the yellow brick road and barbers that offer beverages all have in common? Culver City. We’ve spotlighted a few hidden gems in the city known as, “The Heart of Screenland”. Do yourself a favor and take a selfie at one of these spots. You’ll look cool-trust me.
Discover: Everyone has aspirations of being a star. If it’s Alex Trebek, Judy Garlard, Daniel Tosh, Fred Savage or even Toby Maguire, well, they’ve all passed thru The Sony Pictures Studio at one time or another. Walk in the steps of greatness by taking a Sony Pictures Studios Tour (sonypicturesstudiostours.com). And for those looking to dabble in a bit of darkness check out the Breaking Bad RV and cook-up some blue. If you’re looking to be one with nature then head over to the Star Eco Station (ecostation.org). An exotic wildlife rescue center and a haven for endangered and illegally-trafficked exotic animals. Visitors will have the chance to meet the animals up close and personal. Exhibits include Oceania, US Fish and Wildlife, Reptile Kingdom, and Bird Paradise. And remember next time you try to come home with a turtle or snake in your pants-don’t. They belong in nature.
Taste: Grab a cup of java at The Conservatory and fall in love with the morning. This gem opened in 1995 and have been providing delicious drinks to Culver City ever since. From fresh squeezed OJ to in-house tea-bagging and bean roasting-you won’t be disappointed (conservatorycoffeeandtea.com). If you’re smart enough to enjoy some great Za, you need to get your ass over to Wildcraft Sourdough Pizza (wildcraftpizza.com). This place offers not only tasty wood-fired pizzas, but also some out of this world paninis and appies. Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to an order of the lamb meatballs. I’ll be damned if they are some of the best balls you’ve ever put in your mouth.
Experience: Like a mullet, it’s all business in the front and party in the back with The Blind Barber (blindbarber.com). If you’re looking for a fresh fade to step-up your game while enjoying a libation kick back in the one of their Barber’s chairs. If your ears are already lowered then head straight to the back like you know what you’re doing to their hidden speakeasy. The bar in the back knocks it out of the park with their varying ‘’Drink of the Week’’ and delicious menu of grilled cheeses. If you’re looking to watch the brutalist babes on 4-wheels then get your ass over to watch the Angel City Derby Girls (angelcityderby.com) throw down at Culver City Veterans Auditorium on Friday, March 22. It’s a double-header of Roller Derby Madness and an experience like none other.
